Because we are online this year, and in order to keep our content as centralized as possible, I am using Compass as our landing space. In that location, the students have a calendar that indicates all assignments in the class (due dates, point value, prompt) and a homework tab that shares the same information. From Compass, they have a link to our class google doc for each thematic unit we are working on. We use this google doc each time we meet as the space to indicate what we are doing in class that day and what is being assigned for homework. It is also a shared space in which we can collaborate during classtime by having students fill in information, add sentences, etc. Having this format allows us to work together in real-time, to learn from one another on the spot, and to be accountable to one another as well. In addition to the class google doc, there are tabs/links to grammar review, items we will read and discuss (literary pieces, articles), geography, etc. It is like a one-stop shop with many links for the students to explore on their own if they wish to, in addition to whatever is being assigned. I am hoping to also take advantage of the Discussion board tool in Compass to have extended dialogs with the students on various topics, in written format.
In addition to Compass, the students also are using Flipgrid. This space allows them to record in video format a response to a prompt. Since our time in class is more limited this year, the opportunities for extended conversations and extended moments to speak are also limited. Flipgrid gives the students the chance to speak, either spontaneously or in rehearsed fashion. If they wish to use all the time allotted, more power to them, but if they feel like they said everything they had to say in 30 seconds, that is okay too. I can respond to them in private feedback through a video or written format, and peers can respond to them as well, if assigned to do so.
Generally speaking, we have two assignments a week outside of our two hours of Zoom time for class - usually one written assignment which they will upload to Compass and I can mark up, respond to, provide feedback on, and offer suggestions on how to improve their work; and one oral assignment in Flipgrid.
I also have an office hour on Wednesdays (Flex days) where students can drop in for questions, for a chat, whatever they need.
Grades are still getting posted in Powerschool and I encourage the students to check it to make sure I am up-to-date with whatever they have submitted. We want students to continue to feel motivated to complete their work and I will continue to take work if it is late, without penalty, but it does need to be in before the quarter is over, and in order to stay current with what we are studying, it is much better if the students don't delay too long in getting their assignments in, while it "feels relevant".
Please feel free to reach out to me if you have questions or concerns - I am always happy to set up a time to meet on Zoom, or to discuss something via email ([email protected])
