French 4 students were issued a challenge at the beginning of this semester - to select a book of their choice, written by a francophone author, in French. The idea is to push themselves out of their comfort zone, without getting completely frustrated, and then in the end feel good about their accomplishment. I have been pleasantly surprised by their selections and this past week, and next week, I will be meeting with each student to talk about how their reading is progressing, and how they are processing what they read. My suggestion to them has been to keep track on paper or computer of the new words or expressions they learn; of the characters in the story; and finally of the main actions. Each student will be doing something similar to what they do in some of their English classes at Uni - a book talk, so it will help them to keep track of those items as they read.
French 3 students have proven to be great poets! Last week, they read a poem by Jacques Prevert titled Pour faire le portrait d'un oiseau, and I asked them to write a poem of their own about an animal or insect, and several students chose to follow Prevert's style! Good poems!
A month and a week into the school year, the students keep me on my toes, bring smiles and laughter, and are apparently interested in learning some more French! Hip hip hip hourrah!
