Students in French 3 and French 4 were "introduced" to our new Peace Corps Volunteer Nikole Vannest, serving in Senegal. They were invited to read her blog posts last night, and then take time in class today to write letters to her (individually or in small groups). The letters are written, and I will scan them and send them electronically as well as by snail mail since her access to internet is erratic. I really enjoyed the thoughtful letters, the reflective questions, and the time they put into writing a good letter, Nikole will enjoy reading them. The correspondence will take place in English, even though these are French language courses, because Nikole will be giving us insight on the cultural level about a francophone African country, so we are concentrating on gaining an understanding of what her experiences are, what some of the traditions are, etc. There is plenty of time for French in the classroom, but this is a pearl worth digging for in English.
